how important is having mobo-supported memory for an e8400?

its important for ANY mobo to have supported memory. It doesn't matter if the ram you buy is quicker than suppoerted (the ram will slow itself down) but you must make sure the mobo can support the voltage of whatever ram you buy and that it doesn't have any other weired requirements - such as number of chips on an individual ram stick.

If you match the ram specs to your mobos spec, you should be ok with generic ram - JUST MAKE SURE THE SPECS MATCH!!!
