I am just choosing a new pc and cant decide what set up to have for my graphics card. I will be running my pc through a 22 inch monitor and cant decide between 2 x 9800gtx+ in sli or a gx280. I know my max resolution limits the cards somewhat but I still want the most powerful set up now in case I upgrade my monitor. It's not a money issue so can I have some opinions on which graphics card set up will be better regardless of value. Thanks

Dual 9800gtx+ will significantly outperform single gtx280.

Thanks, that helps make my mind up. Out of interest would a single gtx280 run something like crysis on full settings in 1680x1050 or would I just be being greedy with the dual 9800gtx+? The rest of the pc consists of Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz , 4GB DDR2 @ 800Mhz. Thanks

Crysis at 1680x1050, DX10 with shaders on Very High, other settings on High. Gtx280 gets 40.7 fps.

Q6600 and 4gb of ram should be enough.

Thanks for your help. Haven't bought a new pc for 5 years so everything is new!

Honestly, if you want to play Crysis on any other level than the first, you need over 40 frames in the GPU test. Preferably 45. The chart previously posted at Anands is the GPU test i believe. So, yes, the sli 9800 GTX will play at that, but it can't "max" it. Throughout the game, your frame rate will drop considerably.
Just saying.

That was the gtx280, the 9800gtx gets only 30.2 fps at that settings. :p

in that chart, the 8800gt sli was at 46 fps. I would assume that the 9800 gtx sli would do marginally better than that...

I think.

oh wait, dagger was talking single cards while i was talking sli. Duh.

For the record, a 9800 GX2 is probably cheaper and just as fast...

I think I have narrowed my choice down to a single gtx 280 or two radeon 4870 in crossfirex. Any suggestions which will be the best? As I said above my basics are Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz (oc'd to 3.2) , 4GB DDR2 @ 800Mhz and I will be running it through a 22 inch monitor but want something for higher resolutions as I might upgrade my monitor in the future.

Dual 4870 will significantly outperform gtx280. You'll have to step up to 9800gx2 to be in the same league as dual 4870.

u mean sli 9800gx2 right? because one of them is not in the same league as 4870 crossfire...

maximus u should do what im doing.... crossfire 2 4850s... thats better than the gtx 280 and better than the 9800gx2... $350 total... if u pick the 4850s with double slot for cooling, like i did, it goes up to $400, so you should think about it...
heres a reliable link with benchmarks showing all the setups ur considering...

There are some benchmarks in that same article, but they used higher resolutions and settings, and results seems much more inconsistent. Rankings of different cards jump around from game to game.
