I currently have a really old 8800GTS 320mb and i just got a new wide screen monitor that goes up to 1600 x 1050 , with x-mas coming around the corner I'am in the market for a new card. My rig is a 3.6ghz C2D e8400 with a Asus 38x board, 4 gigz of ballistix ram at 1066.

Games im looking to play are : Crysis , Clear Skies, Left 4 Dead, along with most new games coming out.

Price cap is 600$ so im wondering whats better 4870x2 or 2 4870s in CF, or does a single gtx280 take the cake?

i believe u have 2 pcie slots for cf. i would recommend the 4870x2 and later on when drivers mature and u need more firepower just add another 4870x2.

Youll see much better scaling using 3 gpus than going to 4, and at that res, and those cards, youll be good for a long time

Definitely the HD 4870 X2 if you want unrivaled performance, however it might be wise to wait a little longer since I have a nagging feeling that the HD 4850 X2 release is right around the corner. (Take a hint ATI, tomorrow is as good as any day to release it and finally put that crippled two-legged dog known as the GTX 280 out of it's misery)

At that res, you'll probably be good with a single 4870x2 for a good while.

You didnt list your power supply. Any of those setups will need a quality/ high output power supply.
