Hello, thanks to global warming and the like... my house just got flooded and my media/gaming PC was ($%*ing well vanquished...
I figure the claim is worth about £1700, please correct me on the value of my machine if you think im mistaken, here are the specs:
Asus Striker II Extreme 790i Ultra SLI
Core 2 Quad Q9550
EVGA Geforce 9800GX2 SSC Edition
2 Gigs of SuperTalent 1600mhz DDR3 RAM
Creative Soundblaster X-FI Fatality Champion Series
Coolermaster Realpower Modular 1000watt
Silverstone TJ10 Case
Western Digital 150gb Velociraptor/Western Digital Caviar 750gb
Well, since currently i have no computer my thinking is that i buy a new one, better than the last for the sake of future proofing, and to make me happy, it's either that or i hire 5 full time prostitues since there really isn't anything else good about this situation.
I'd really appreciate it if you folks could give me some idea on the components i should put in this new build, and whether there's anything on the horizon that i should wait for.

Thanks alot.
if you wanna spend that kind of money, and want the build to be future-proof, then you might as well wait for the X58 boards and core i7 cpu's. they'll be out sometime soon.
Im not really sure whether or not nahalem is a good idea tbh, due to the high demand on release the chips and mobo's will probably cost more than twice that of their actual value, im not really sure about the real world performance gains either, as with alot of new architechtures most of my games and applications probably won't make use of the super hyper threading that these new cpu's feature, and the release reference x58 motherboards are bound to be less feature packed than current top of the line x48/790i boards. Please correct me if im wrong.
I agree with most of what you said. If you want to build now is as good a time as any, Nehalem seems to be good, but it won't be a reality at least until Q1 2009. If I were you, I'd forget about all the nvidia stuff, DDR3, and ESPECIALLY those horrendous nvidia chipsets.
Start over with a DFI LanParty X38-T2R, HD 4870 X2, 4GB of DDR2 1066, Q9450, another X-Fi, 500-1TB HDD, and an Antec truepower Quattro 1000w. You can drop a second HD 4870 X2 later on since the board runs on true x16/x16.

You are wasting A LOT of money on fancy stuff (DDR3, X48, QX CPU), but getting no performance boost whatsoever. Q9550, X38 DDR2 board, and DDR2 memory would work just as fast as the stuff you're picking and you'd be saving like $900 that grant you no extra performance.
When I tell you that the X48 boards are not in any way or shape superior to the X38 I'm serious. X48 is only a cooler running X38 with "official" 1600FSB support (The X38 can EASILY handle that) and dual gigabit LAN (X38 boards have one gigabit LAN port instead)
The X38 will overclock just as well as the X48 (X48 chips are just higher binned X38s) will, and for the time being OC'ing current CPUs doesn't warrant anything other than DDR2 1066 ram. Trust me when I say that right now you will not see any gains by using DDR3 or an X48 chipset.
