I am in the market for a new computer to build, and am wondering, is now as good a time as ever to buy parts? I am currently running a P4 with a 1650 pro (ouch), and desperately would like to build a nice gaming rig. With all these talks about new processors and vid cards, is it safe to buy now, or wait until the beginning of October (or even later) to buy a new chip. I know how dynamic t the market is, i am just looking for the best time to buy.
I think, if you can wait for core i7 to come out, then wait, but it wouldn't be such mistake to buy now, because I think that prices of todays processors and maybe MB would be lower, but not significatly. That is just my opinion.
Agreed. If you waited that long between computers, then a few extra months ought to be little to wait for you. The new ones should be out early in the fall. You may deal with some of the glitches of new tech, but I think you'd be silly not to wait for it.
Nehalem/I7 will be a quad core beast, starting at $300 or so and up. It will also need DDR3 and a X58 motherboard which will be pricey.
It is worth waiting for if you are looking for multitasking of multicore applications. Gaming does not fit that mold, unless your game is FSX or supreme commander.
For gaming, the vga card is by far the most important component. There is always something better coming, but if you can look at a GTX260/4870/9800GX2 type card and a E8500, today is a pretty good time to buy. 4gb of ddr2-800 is also cheap today. Such a system is reasonable, and a massive improvement over your current rig.
