XP gets to the windows spalsh screen then crashes and reboots again

Hello, After a couple of power cuts my windows XP pro will not boot up. It gets to the problem screen that offers safe mode, last known config that worked or start normally but whichever one you choose leads to the same result. The windows splash screen appears and seems to be loading, then it crashes and the loop starts again. I have tried downloading a recovery disk but my computer won'trecognise it. I have the original XP disk somewhere, but we have just moved and it could be in any of around 100 boxes! Any help greatly appreciated.

you are describing the symptoms of defective McAfee anti virus, or a virus that has infected the computer.
The directions for a repair install are posted in this forum, sixth post from the top. You will need the XP installation disk. This does not erase your files.
