for a single evga 9800gtx, do i need a big power supply or could i get just a 500watt or 600watt?
the cpu im gonna use is an athlon x2 5600+ 2.8ghz.
So is a 500 watt power supply high enough or will a 600watt do the job?

500w is more than enough.

I'd worry less about the watts and more about the quality of the PSU and the +12v power it supplies. An affordable Antec Earthwatts 430W has more 12v (30 amps) than many generic 500W. I am running an HD4850 with that PSU. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6817371006

A good 400w+ psu would do the trick.
