This computer will be used for Photoshop Editing, some lightweight video editing, and the normal word processing/spreadsheet stuff. It is based on a system my son's friend put together for gaming. I bought the parts and watched him put it together, and it has been working good for him away at college. I found the process interesting and wanted to try for myself. There might be some gaming on this, but that is not the primary purpose.

Here's what I have so far:

For backup I thought this docking station with another Samsung HD like the one above:

Thermaltake ST0005U ABS Plastic 2.5" & 3.5" USB & eSATA HDD Docking Station

none of the link is working mate!

get vista home premium forget about the ultimate because there are so much useless background service a normal home user can take advantage of at all.

for the money saved you can get a bigger 22" or even better 24" monitor. plus you dont need 2 optical drive or the docking station do you?

Reply to iluvgillgill

The monitor is a IPS panel that works better for photo editing. Most larger LCD panels are TN panels, which are apprently inferior for that. That's what I read, anyway.

I kind of liked the two DVD drives so I don't have to write to the HD when copying DVD's.

And I was thinking the Visat Ultimate version because it offers better backup choices.

All the above is based on my limited knowledge, and what I've read here and there----so is highly suspect. Any comments on the above? (The links seem to work here-----not sure what's happening with that.)

Thanks for your input!

Vista Ultimate does save multiple revisions of files... something that it and the Business version can do. Example... you're working on a large document, accidentally erase the contents in the document and then save your changes. You've lost your work. With Vista Ultimate... no problem... revert back to a previous version.

Would I be willing to pay nearly $100 for that "feature"? Ha. No way. Microsoft should have left that in all versions of Windows... how crazy is that to have to pay for document security? This ain't Windows Movie Maker or Media Center we're talking about... shame on you Microsoft!

I would strongly advise against a Raidmax power supply. I would suggest this Antec + power supply in it's place $80 after rebate
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6811129024
or get the Raidmax case without the power supply and get a decent PSU
This EVGA 8800GT with better cooling for +$5
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814130347
hmmm you have a Corsair 550w PSU listed already. Great power supply.
I would recommend this RAM DDR2 800 1.8v 2x2 Mushkin

If your going to get a seperate Power Supply it's best to get the RAIDMAX SMILODON without the PSU to save a few bucks. Well unless your going to use that Raidmax PSU on something else anyway. I also recommend you spend a little more on the GPU and go with a 4850.

Get a RC-690 case and an HD 4850. Not sure why you'd need a DVD-ROM drive.

I would definitely recommend going with a 4850 over an 8800gt...and go with quality ddr2 800 ram instead of ddr2 1000...

Ah, I missed the part about the DVD-ROM. Actually, it's better to copy to the HDD first, because copying from a DVD-ROM to a DVD-R directly can lead to buffer underruns and ruining a blank. Also, if the source disk is scratched, it's best to find out while the image is created on the HDD, not after the target DVD has been started - again, you save 30 cents or whatever a blank costs.
