What hardware need to be 64bit for building a 64bit system?

I know OS have to be 64bit, but I'm not sure about the hardware, what hardware need to be 64bit capable to fully support 64bit applications, OS etc?

With 64-bit i'm assuming you mean AMD64 aka x86-64, and not the IA-64 Itanium architecture.

If its AMD64, any recent AMD or Intel processor will do. Some older AMD Sempron and Celeron didn't support AMD64, but any Intel/AMD CPU you buy now should.
