i have a hp compaq nc4200 notebook i keep getting;
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

then at the bottom of the page it says

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME indicates the hard drive has failed or will fail completely very soon. The drive will have to be replaced.

i thought that but the same happened to my friends pc so i reinstalled xp n it works fine do you think it would b the same here?

Very possible, but if you have your XP disc handy, you can attempt a repair install or run chkdsk /r /f

Check the HDD with a drive checking utility, some manufacturers include them with the HDD purchase.
