Here is what I am thinking about for a first build. I would like to keep it under $500 if possible but then again things always change.

If there are better parts or pieces other than I have listed here please let me know. I will be using this for mostly internet browsing, web surfing and a little game playing. Not much gaming. I realize I don't have a video card listed but will the onboard video on this motherboard work or do I need a video card? Or can I wait and get one later?

Thanks for your help.

Jeff

About $570, but completely worth it. Biggest differences with your setup is that this one has a decent PSU, the motherboard is 790GX+SB750 which will allow you easier overclocking on Phenom chips once you decide to drop one in, and you have a graphics card capable of running games at medium resolutions (1440x900 - 1680x1050).

Apevia power supply! GET IT AWAY!!!!!! AUGHHH!!!

Seriously, don't bother with that case. Built-in power supplies are rarely any good, especially if they are from those guys. Get yourself a seperate power supply (you won't need much with an IGP). Speaking on integrated graphics, while that will be fine for general use, you didn't say what games you wanted to play. That will have trouble with more recent titles.

CPU/Mobo combo - $140!!! Decent CPU and mobo combo. Latest onboard GPU, incase your dedicated GPU fails you can still use your computer while waiting for the GPU to be fixed/RMA'd!!!
Combo link, look at 3rd combo down from the top!

BIOSTAR TFORCE TA790GX A2+ AM2+/AM2 AMD 790GX HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail

GPU/Memory combo - $160 - $45 MIR's = $115!!! Can't beat this deal on this combo! Dual slotted GPU, so the hot air from the GPU gets pushed out the back of the case!!!

HD - $60 shipped! Plenty to start with. Add another HD later, if you need the space.
Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD2500AAKS 250GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM

DVD Burner - $25 shipped!!! This is a "Retail" version, so you'll get the necessary software to Read/Burn DVD's!
LITE-ON Black 20X DVD+R 8X DVD+RW 8X DVD+R DL 20X DVD-R 6X DVD-RW 12X DVD-RAM 16X DVD-ROM 48X CD-R 32X CD-RW 48X CD-ROM 2MB Cache IDE 20X DVD±R DVD Burner - Retail

Case/PSU combo - $85 shipped!!! One of the cheaper and more reliable Case/PSU comob's out there. I have a e6700/x1800xt/2gb's DDR2/DVD burner running in this same case/psu combo. Which is more power consuming than what your looking for.
Antec New Solution Series NSK3480 Chassis - Tower APFC Power Supply 380W 3 x External, 1 x Internal - Black, Silver

OS - $99 shipped! The one you should get now, so you can upgrade to 4 gb's of DDR2 later or more!!!
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit English for System Builders 1pk DSP OEI DVD - OEM

Total = $570 - $45 MIR's = $525!!! Now that is one heck of a budget build!! Gonna be hard to beat the gaming performance with this build for the $!!!
