Hi, I have decided to upgrade from my laptop to a more gaming worthy machine. I do not play really intense games really often, but when I do I want them to look good. Here is what I have come up with for a build after doing a little research on newegg and reading some topics here:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6819115017

I do intend on overclocking this to about 3.0 - 3.2Ghz

GPU (expect to pay 200-300): GeForce GTX 260

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6814127361

When I search for this on newegg I get many different brands, not sure who to go with?

MB: GIGABYTE GA-EP35-DS3L

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] yte%20ep35

This was the hardest to narrow down, and I still may be way off. Can I connect wirelessly to my LAN? Is this a standard now? Also I wont need SLI/crossfire so that should save me some money. Does this let me overclock well?

Case: NZXT Tempest

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] %20tempest

It is big and has 6 fans, is this overkill? Are there less expensive alternatives? I don't care what it looks like I just want it to be big and cool.

CD drive: Sony NEC Optiarc SATA drive

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6827118012

Nothing fancy here.

HD: Seagate Barracuda 400gb SATA

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6822148138

For my purposes, 400gb should be sufficient for now.

Memory: CORSAIR 4GB

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820145184

How does this look for memory? I would like to keep it under $70 if possible.

Monitor: ASUS VW193T Black 19" 5ms Widescreen LCD Monitor

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 0vw%20193t

PSU: CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W ATX12V

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6817139005

Seems a little pricey to me, are there any alternatives?

OS: Windows Vista 64-bit

Well there it is, I hope I didn't forget anything, if I did let me know. I am open to all suggestions. I have also heard of bottlenecking, not sure exactly what I means but I would like for that not to happen :). And is everything compatible, would really hate to get it and find out the parts don't work together. I would also like to keep the whole cost below $1200 if possible. Oh, and if anyone has suggestion on a good keyboard/mouse for like $50 that isn't necessarly a gaming keyboard, but is capable of playing games I'd like to here it (I like somewhat quite keyboards).

Thanks in advance,

Zach

It looks fine. No obvious bottlenecks.

For motherboard, consider GA-EP45-DS3L instead of GA-EP35-DS3L. It's only $15 more, and the native 1600mhz fsb) support will make oc a lot easier. Definitely no need for chipset voltage increase until 3.6ghz(1600mhz fsb), it's one less variable to worry about.

Also, for single card, consider 9800gx2 instead of gtx260. It cost around the same, but performance blows away the gtx260.

After taking a look at both of those suggestion I will be going with the EP45 and 9800gx2. I was looking at both of those orginally, but could not tell the difference from that and what I had chosen. Thanks dagger!

Nice build, good advice by Dagger. With the price of the Tempest and free shipping it's hard to find a better deal for a quality case. Possibly this Coolermaster 590 at $70 with free shipping from buy.com

Well the GX260 is a newer generation card and may play better than the dual GPU, previous gen 9800GX2, in many games. If you aren't that hard core of a gamer (which resoultion anyway?) a single GX260 may be more future proof. That's just my opinion...

As far as PSU, $90 after rebate is CHEAP for a quality Corsair PSU like that. Don't even think that you should be saving any more money there, a good PSU is the most important part of a stable system. That Corsair is a perfect pick for you.

Also, I think you would be much happier going with a 22" widescreen. I know it's $50 more roughly but I think it would be REALLY worth it

only $198 with free shipping. i have had my Acer for 3 years now and LOVE it.

I am probably going to play at the max resolution that either a 19" or 22" supports, if that makes sense. Anymore opinions on the GPU (9800 gx2 vs GX260)? Does brand matter? Will the EP45 support wireless LAN? Thanks for all the help so far.

The idea of gtx260 being more "futureproof" makes no sense. No matter how drivers mature and becomes optimized for gtx260, it'll never outperform 9800gx2. The gap in raw power is far too big. Both runs on pcie2.0, support DX10, and runs Physx. Nothing technically new about gtx260.

Brand does not matter. They're based on the same reference board using the same chip brought from Nvidia. Only difference is warranty and costumer support.

Yes, EP45 supports wireless LAN. It doesn't have onboard wifi, of course, so you have to put in a pci/pciex1 wireless card.

Great advice so far. Should I be concerned about cooling my OCed CPU with 6 fans in the case? I have also heard that shorter cables (unable to reach components) are an issue at times, should I be concerned about this? Thanks.

You should get aftermarket cooler for any kind of oc. Stock will not do for quad core.

If you use a standard layout tower case with top mounted psu, don't worry, it'll definitely reach. If you use a case with bottom mounted psu, it may become a problem with some psu models.

"to a more gaming worthy machine"

If this is for gaming - wouldnt you be better off with an e8400 as opposed to the q6600?

Its my understanding that for gaming the e8400 would be a much better choice as not alot of games will take advantage of the four cores in the Q6600.

E8400 also has great OC potential.

Just thought I would throw that in there :)
