Hi all,

I am so tired of my Tungsten E's incompetent grafitti2 system. I had a
PalmIIIX years ago, and text entry was manageable on it. Now, after
having my Tungsten E for over a year, I find myself using paper more
and more, because it just takes too long to enter, check, repair,
enter, check, repair all my writing on my Tungsten.

There are many glyphs that are problematic, but the easiest example is
the backstroke. When I make an error (often), I carefully put the
stylus in the grafitti zone midway on the right side pulling to the
left as it touches down, continuing to the left at a constant rate,
and then I pick the stylus up from the surface as it comes to the
mid-left side of the grafitti area. And what do I get? A backspace?
No! Half the time, I get a period! Then I try to "erase" this mistake,
and half the time, it happens again! And again! Ugh!

The PalmPilot never would have gotten off the ground if its
handwriting recognition had been this bad.

I entered a complaint to Palm about this at
http://www.palmone.com/us/support/ [...] pport.html
I'm just waiting now to hear, "Welcome to PalmOne Customer Support. My
name is Raj and I'll be helping you today. I see that you are having a
problem hotsyncing . . . I'll then say that it has nothing to do with
hotsync, and then I'll get another machine reply, perhaps even from
the same person, er, machine, repeating their intro, "Welcome to
PalmOne Customer Support. My name is Raj and I'll be helping you today
.. . ." Eventually, I'll get the customer satisfaction survey, and the
problem will remain unaddressed. I don't know which is more irritating
-- having this shouldn't-exist-problem or going through PalmOne's
underfunded, off-shored support system.

Is the only remedy for this trying to user-install the original
grafitti subsystem? Does anyone who used both the old and then new
grafitti like the new system?

Thanks for responses and just hearing me rant.

Of course not. The other way around is learning to use it :-)

I like the new one, because if you write BIG and a little slower (with a
GOOD stylus), the recognition rate and overall speed sends the G1 down
the sink.

I'm not quite sure how you claim to write slower yet claim an overall
speed increase, unless you were making a significant number of mistakes
with the original Graffiti -- Personally, I rarely make a mistake, and
when I do it's usually because I'm holding my Palm at an angle.

Where you refer to not being able to do a delete, and getting a period
instead, the problem is not with Graffitti II but rather with the
digitizer being worn out.

As proof of this, put you TE in the refrigerator for 15 minutes or so.
Now take it out and try it. It will work like new, but only till it
warms up again.

Buy a copy of TealScript and install it. Voila! Grafitti 1 back.

That's right, but I account it to the fact I couldn't get myself a
decent stylus with which writing would be comfortable. With the T3
stylus I'm still somewhat slower on my friends m515, most probably
because I already got used to the G2 and am slow to recall G1 strokes.

Another way to see if it is indeed your digitizer being worn out would
be to go to the Palm Prefs/Writing Area and select ON (write anywhere
on screen) and use the screen to do your graffitti text entry.

Thanks for the tips, Paliface. I hesitated in putting the Tungsten in
the fridge. After taking it out, moisture would have condensed all
around and inside it. Instead, I did leave it downstairs in my garage
for a few hours at 10 degree Celsius. I used it down there. Input
seemed nearly the same -- perhaps a little better.

Using the anywhere on screen writing, though, that worked great! My
error level is back better than ever. I don't know if it is the
digitizer being on the fritz or if the larger strokes are just easier
to recognize, but for now I'm going to continue using the full
onscreen grafitti.

I can once again actually use my Palm on a daily basis.

Thanks again.

I tried to give the easiest example I could (the backstroke erase),
with a good amount of detail, showing that my technical writing
ability was not the issue. It seems that your reading ability is about
as good as my Palm's OCR ability ;-)

That's what zip-it plastic bags are very useful for :-)

Copy the files onto an SD Card and install them from there -- the
above .zip file should have further instructions.
