School setting question:

What would be a good server that can accomadate 1200 laptops hooking onto a news program. We are trying to set up a morning news reel that students and teachers can access on their laptops for a few minutes each morning. It would also serve as the server for 30 desktop computers in the computer classroom.

if it is 1200 all at the same time good luck, and samba i hear works well in these situations, i think it will come down more to network infrastructure than the server itself

Agreed. For something like a news real my old P1 old probably do the job, albeit a bit slugish, so anything moderately new should handle the work load.

OK. We have a T3 wireless network in the school. The news report wont be on the 1300 laptops ( I was thinking of all the traffic) but probably all the teachers laptops to show each class during homeroom. This would be about 89 teachers.

Would a simple server made by Dell suffice? Coincidently, we have Dell coming in on Monday to work on our 2 year olf iBooks to put on Macs new OS---Leopard. We have 626 ibooks and 674 MacBooks
