I'm looking to build a new computer and have most everything picked out already. However, I plan on mostly playing WoW and some other FPS games with some small video editing on the side. I am basically wondering if getting a 4870 X2 is worth it over getting something cheaper. I can afford to get the X2, but does it really make sense from a price/performance ratio just for WoW and the other aformentioned games or should I go with something cheaper.

Thanks in advance,

Ausmus

I'd definitely get something cheaper. Look at the 4850/70.

I prefer to play at 1920 x 1200, but thats the highest resolution I can get at the moment. I would prefer to play at the highest resolution I can get to maximize the space I have for addons and whatnot.

You'll see better performance with the x2, but it's just not worth the money. Get a 4870. If you need to in the future, you can add another for CF.

4870x2 will make absolutely no difference for WoW, even at 1920x1200. It's very light on graphics by today's standard. You'll be able to max it out with even a $50 8600gts weakling.

what are these fps games and what proportion of your time do you spend on them?

I spend a few hours a week (5-10ish) playing FPS games. They include TF2, and COD4.

Here's fps chart for CoD4. Decide yourself what frame rate is enough.

TF2 is lighter, so cards that run CoD4 should work fine on it.

yeah i would say for WoW and TF2 and CoD4 a HD4870 would be just fine at your res. a HD4870 X2 would be a waste and like someone said before later on you can add another (if you have right mobo) HD4870 for crossfire and get the same performance as the HD4870 X2
