My question is probably simple but complicated
I am wanting a new MOBO for my PC. I want an AM2+ board for the future. There are many AMD boards out there and most of them with non nforce chipsets. I want to stick with Nvidia graphics cards. Is it then recommended to stay with an Nforce board or can I go with say a 790GX board? I am getting the 260GTX from Nvidia and just want to get the best performance out of it.
The main reason I ask this is also because I currently have a 590sli board which states a performance increase when paired with a geforce card. I want to upgrade the mobo but do it smoothly while keeping my install of vista in tact ( really dont want to reinstall windows as I have lots of crap on there!)

Well if your only going to be running one video card it really doesn't matter which brand of chipset your going to use (ATi or nVidia) but I wouldn't recommend mixing a nVidia card with a 790GX chipset, just because it has ATi onboard graphics and when you install the motherboard drivers its going to toss in the ATi video driver. You should use a 790FX chipset which doesn't have the onboard graphics. No matter which way you go either ATi chipset or one of the newer boards with nVidia chipset you should do a clean install of Windows. Grab yourself an external drive and backup the data you want to keep intact before you switch boards.
Yeah, I usually do a clean install just really dont want to this time around. I typically upgrade about every 12months. The FX board.. Ill check that one out thanks. Yeah Im not too concerned about integrated grfx just a good board for the money. Most of the nforce boards are about 140+ and I was hoping to stay around 100. I know Im cheap but thats how it goes lol.
That I run with an 8800gt. I have the latest ati drivers for the northbridge installed and the latest gforce drivers and no issues.
This is a budget board but I have been able to oc my AMD9850 from 2.5ghz to 3.2, I run 3.0 day to day for thermal/safety reasons. Anyway the two driver packages can work together in harmony, I score 12000 in 3dmark06.
I used to score 11000 on my 590sli crosshair mobo with my fx-62 clocked at 3.15 ghz using that same 8800gt.
But were I to make that decision right now, I'd get an HD4850 knowing that I could crossfire down the road which I plan on doing anyway.
Honestly, I don't like either of those boards.
I am waiting for the newer boards because I hear good things about phenom 2. They have an asrock board that is am3 ready but it appears out of stock at this time.
If you can't wait , why not look at the nrforce 8000 series? They have hybrid sli and the boards are in your price range.
I did look into those series of boards. Thing is that I am definitely getting the 260GTX card. I cant see pairing it with that board. So far:
650W Corsair PSU - 99.00
260GTX card - 249.99
6000AM2 or 7750AM2+ - 80.00
Cooler Master Case (needed a better cooling case) - 79.99
MOBO (insert here lol) - 100-140
I already have the ram 4gm of pc6400. I have the DVDRW drive and a 300gb hdd. This all started with my 22" widescreen I got for xmas.
So basically this is getting me to around 600 spent in which I will get back 300 just by selling my old stuff.
Unless someone thinks there is a better case for that price... thats what Im sticking with. I "might" upgrade the vid card to an OC version for a few bucks more. This should hold me until late 09/early 10 for gaming
