I know this is not really a graohics card issue but I did not know where in the forum to ask questions about monitors. I was wondering how much better a 22 inch 16:10 is over my 19 inch 4:3.

Currently I have a samsung 931B
Display
Screen Size 19"
Widescreen No
Maximum Resolution 1280 x 1024
Recommended Resolution 1280 x 1024
Viewing Angle 160°(H) / 160°(V)
Brightness 300 cd/m2
Contrast Ratio 700:1
Response Time 5ms

looking at an Acer Acer X223Wbd
Display
Screen Size 22"
Widescreen Yes
Maximum Resolution 1680 x 1050
Recommended Resolution 1680 x 1050
Viewing Angle 170°(H) / 160°(V)
Brightness 300 cd/m2
Contrast Ratio 2500:1
Response Time 5ms

right now (10/4/08) newegg has this monitor on special $179.00 w/free shipping.

Also in case you are wondering I am running 8800GTS 512

If you're building a new computer, might as well get the bigger monitor. But I wouldn't think just the extra 3 inches is worth the $180. From specs, the only real advantage other than size is 2500:1 contrast ratio, but it's far higher than you'd need. Contrast that high will wear your eyes out quickly, so you won't be using the max ratio anyway.

not building a new system did that last march.

system was mentioned in my sig which I guess I need to update. Now I am running Vista 64 and have two 8800 GTS 512 in SLI.

Thing is I have some birthday cash to spend and it is burning a hole in my pocket.

Hehe, i was thinking the same thing. I saw that deal on newegg and wondered if I should get it and put my 19" monitor elsewhere!
it's such a sweet deal!
But, honestly, do you need it? i like my 19" and I do not think i have the room for a 22" :(

I don't think it's worth upgrading to right now. 19" is quite a lot of screen room, even when you are use to it.

i have the acer monitor in question, bought it for the wide screen aspect, point is it is what you want that counts, would you be more content with a wide screen because it is only a few inches wider than what you have,,
OTOH,, you might run the 2 monitors together,or sell off the samsung or pass it to some other member of your family..:)

well to rabidbunny is your 19 a widescreen or a 4:3? Mine is 4:3 if I had a 19 inch widescreen I would not even consider the switch. This is really a debate over 4:3 vs 16:10, adding 3 inches is not the major issue. Although the extra real estate would be nice. Also I can't really go bigger than the 22 because of the desk I am using. The new monitor is 21.5 inches wide which is the same as the opening available. If I pull the trigger and buy this I will take my 19 inch to work so I dont have to use my 14 inch laptop screen.

That's a matter of personal preference. Some people like widescreen, others don't.

As for widescreen appearing bigger than standard, it's the opposite. They did a study quite a while ago, showing people 20" widescreen and 19" standard screen, asking them to tell which one is bigger just by looking using the naked eye, without being able to measure. Nearly all reported that the standard 19" appeared bigger. It's just the way humans perceive surface area, short and stocky will appear bigger than long and narrow.

I know some people say I may be loosing some height on my monitor but my current monitor is 12 inches tall, and 14 3/4 wide for a 19 diagonal.
The new monitor would be 11 2/3 inches tall and 18 2/3 inches wide for a diagonal of 22 inches.

So the question is will I miss the 1/3 inch vertically, more than I would like to gain the roughly 4 inches horizontally?

I also will be gainning more total area 217 sq inches versus my current 177 sq inches.

Also my max resolution will increase for even more viewing area. right?
