Problem with 3d apps & Radeon 3650 hd

I have a strange problem when running programs like 3ds max or rhino 3d: when using hardware 3d acceleration (opengl or direct3d) the viewports start to bug, turn black or just don't display properly. I have a Asus m50SA with the latest catalyst ati drivers, on windows vista 32 bit.
I know it's a very specific problem but it's pretty annoying i need these programs as i am studying architecture, and software rendering is a pain!

Intel Core2Duo T9500 ( 2,6 Ghz)
4096Mo DDR2 667
TFT 15.4'' GT WSXGA+(1680x1050)
ATI Mobility Radeon HD3650 1024MB DDR RAM

I was thinking about installing windows XP instead of vista could this help??
