Would that just be referring to brightness control or is it referring to something else? How would I go about turning it down?

Its the brightness control. Turn down the brightness.

Some displays allow you to control the backlight, however most don't have this feature.

Actually brightness controls the black level, its contrast that controls the white level (backlight).
