My Sapphire x1950 pro broke the other day and I'm looking for a new graphics card, my budget is £100. I'm looking at the XFX GeForce 8800GT 512MB £87.10 http://www.saverstore.com/producti [...] 3&rstrat=1 It says alpha dog edition but Im pretty sure its not because the Part no. says PV-T88P-YHF4 which is the normal one. Anyway I am unsure, do you think this is the best card for under £100?

Thanks a lot if you help.

Welcome aboard.

I`ve had a quick troll through the sites I usually buy from and yes, that card is as good as it gets for £100.
That page is a bit of a mix-up though, I thought the Alpha-Dog version was overclocked, but the card spec shows standard clockspeeds, you might want to give them a call before ordering just to make sure. If it is an overclocked version, you`ve got yourself quite a bargain, if not, it`s still the best price I`ve seen.
My advice is...Buy it, I doubt you`ll find much cheaper outside of E-bay in the UK.
Just one more thing (As Columbo says) I take it you have a PCI-E slot, the X1950 came in both PCI-E and AGP flavours.

Well in Canada, this card is probably worth about $120 or so CAD but prices may further drop to $100 CAD so around 50 - 60 British Pounds. I own this card right now and let me tell you it is amazing for the price/performance ratio. I can play TF2 with Maxed settings on 1280 x 1024 res and AA, CSAA all maxed and still get an average of about 80 fps with a min of 45 on a 32 player server when it is full. If you have a 17 or 19" monitor this graphics card can handle it very well. I have the alpha dog edition so it's OCed to 650 mhz clock. I don't think it really matters if it has been OCed or not because you can just OC it yourself with Riva Tuner anyways.

for that price, it's going to be hard to beat. If the 4850 was close to that price, I'd get it, but not sure if it's close enough to buy.

^ The 8800GT often outperforms the HD4850 and it`s cheaper. Who says newer is better?
Nice links BTW

Not all the Alpha Dogs are OC'd versions, the YDF4's are the standard ones.

Only in a handful of games, not sure if it's enough to qualify as "often." Overall, 4850 still perform higher.

Although 8800gt is better bang for the buck though.

There is a 9800GT for $120 after MIR:

And yes. Newegg is now in Canada (assuming you are Canadian, else there is Newegg US)

edit: lolz, just noticed the pound sign in the title, so I guess OP is from UK/Europe?

It's better than g80 8800gts, worse than g92 8800gts.

Just to clarity more on Dagger's statement:
g80 8800gts is usually a 320mb or a 640mb version.
g92 8800gts is a 512mb version.

IIRC that is the case. You'd want the 8800gts 512mb version, if it's under 100 pounds, but it would be pretty close to the 9800gt, iirc.

9800gt is just a renamed 8800gt. Nvidia renaming scheme. :p

there's no way on the big blue globe that the 8800GT often outperforms the HD4850 it is cheaper and a good card for the cash but it will not out perform the 4850
that gt will work out closer to £100 than £90 when you add shipping, you can get the Sapphire for £113 with free shipping from ebuyer, now you tell me thats not a better deal

for (insert pound sign)13 more I'd buy the 4850 over the 88/9800gt any day, but that is me. I'm not the one with the budget so I can't make that decision, but that is what I'd do.

Yum! Humble Pie tastes nice :(
Next time I`ll check the reviews with my glasses on.
Did n`t spot that E-buyer item Rangers, well found. If the OP can find the extra cash it would be a better overall deal although either should make a nice upgrade from a X1900 Pro.
Now to finish up that pie.
