I would like to know if anyone else is having a problem with Best Buy? My
major complaint is Best Buys, Performance Service Plan (PSP) . The Sunday
before Thanksgiving, my wife and I went into Best Buy to buy a Toshiba HD TV
and matching DVD/VHS player. We had 4 Salespeople come sworming down us
like, Vampires after fresh blood, pushing and damn near forcing us to buy
the (PSP). It was a major double tagteam effort to get us to buy the
(PSP). What I would like to know did anyone else have problems with Best
Buy Salepeople when it comes to the (PSP)? Does Best Buy Salepeople get a
bonus for every (PSP) sold? Does the department get a bonus? Writing a
complaint letter to Best Buy Corp. HQ and to Store Manager, did nothing and
filing a compaint online, did nothing. What can a person do to shop without
being pressured into buying something he or she does not want? Timothy

Yes, they often make more on the service plans than on the hardware. Yes the
sales person gets a cut.

But take a deep breath. They would be fired if they did not perform as
expected. Just put on a smile and say no as often as necessary until you get
the best deal. Sometimes you can negotiate a reduced price on the product or
the plan. With some sets the plan might actually be a good deal (if it
covers the bulb on a rear projector, for example).

My approach to this is to wonder (out loud) that if the extended
warranty costs so much, whether this thing I'm considering buying
is so fragile and buggy that I should be buying it AT ALL. Don't
rule out the possibility of just walking out without buying anything
in the face of a hard sell.

I once managed to negotiate a deal that I'd take the extended
warranty if they would SUBTRACT, not add, its cost from the price
of the item.

Not strictly on topic - but in the UK the major high street electronics
retailers make most of their money by selling expensive, extended
warranties, and little profit on the basic goods they sell apparently.

There is one, low cost, sales outlet for consumer electronics "Richer
Sounds" (it specialises in run-out models and slightly less than cutting
edge gear, and doesn't go for expensive shop fittings) whose extended
warranties usually come top of consumer magazine surveys for fairness and
value for money. They charge around 10% of the purchase price - though not
exactly this amount as it is tiered into brackets - for a decent period of
extended cover. The major sweetener is that they guarantee to refund the
full cost of the extended warranty if you haven't claimed on it during the
warranty period. Sure they have had your money for a couple of years to
earn interest on - and I bet most people forget - but they have good
customer service in my experience, and operate the warranty themselves
rather than via a 3rd party. (I think they provide replacement units
wherever possible if your item can re repaired rather than replaced, and
also have a guaranteed buy-back price)

I always compare other warranties to this one!

However Steve, the good news is that there is a noticeable increase in the
amount of a full three-year warranties being offered with electrical
equipment.

All service contacts come with a bonus plan for sales reps. It's free money
for them and the gamble is if the TV does not break it's pure proffit.
