The first will game better right NOW, but the second will last longer (with a GPU upgrade in 6-months or so) due to using the newest chipset, CPU and memory.

after you build core 2, little time goes by.. you realize everyone buying new i7s that spank it, saying to yourself, I shoulda, now i gotta replace cpu mobo and ram... card can upgrade anytime

Yeah, I think the overclocked E8400 with a 4870 X2 would be good for two years. If you're gaming at 1920x1200 then there will be a big difference between that and an i7 with a single 4870. I know everyone is saying to get the i7 since it will have a longer life as a platform, but every time Intel moves to a new socket their chipsets often don't have an upgrade path beyond the chips available when the platform was introduced. It makes sense to buy the i7 system and then add another 4870 latter, but since you want to game at 1920x1200 now and don't want to upgrade for two years the 8400 with 4870X2 would be better for you.

maybe the next time i upgrade i will be core i7 i usually dont buy the newest things i wait like one year wating for prices to drop down(except for gpus) and if i have core i7 right now i will be buying another 4870 in a year later (to much time)
