I found a 9800GX2 on Newegg.com for $270. I currently have a Zotac 8800gt (which is similar to a GTX due to overclocks). My cpu is a intel c2d e8400. I game at 1680x1050. I've heard that because i game at low res the upgrade won't affect my fps much. Is that true?

On current gen games, yes, that's a hard cold proven fact.

But the 8800GT can't cope with AA on current gen games, am i wrong?

If you have an SLI MoBo, just SLI that 8800GT and you'll have a blast. If you can't, think about a 9800GTX+/4850 instead of a 9800GX2. Those 2 cards can handle everything max'ed out (the 9800GTX+ with AA dies, but on higher res).

Well, i don't have an SLI mobo, and a 9800GTX + isn't that different from my 8800gtx.

At that point, i'd just get a 4870.

9800GX2 beats the GTX 280 sometimes.

The performance increase at 1680x1050 is significant. I'd say it's worth it. Low resolution is 1024x768, 1680x1050 qualify as mid-high resolution.

Then if you're fixed on getting that 9800GX2, why ask? =/

At your res, like i said, the 9800GTX+ and the 4850 are the perfect match. If you don't plan on going into higher resolutions, don't get any card then. If what you say is true, and your 8800GT is "like" a 8800GTX, then you don't need an upgrade. If you never fall under 40 FPS on the games, you don't need an upgrade.

The 9800GX2, 9800GTX, 9800GTX+, GTX260 and GTX280 don't offer anything different, except higher FPS from each other. No new tech in games to be seen. Even the CUDA support is the same if i'm not mistaken. At least going to an ATI card will give you the "DX10.1 benefit of the doubt", lol.

You are right.

Question 2.

Will there be some great new thing coming soon. I'd feel like a dumbass if i buy this in late october and in december M$oft announces like DirectX12 coming out in november and the "Every game must run at 60 fps" policy.

Is a 5870 from ATI around the corner to blow this card out of the water?

Let me put it this way.

It's 9800GX2 now, or 5870 later (depending on release date)

It's not a good idea to settle for anything less than 4870. The performance gap is just too small for a worthy upgrade otherwise. :p

5870 is not around the corner. It'll still be a while. There aren't even rumors on its specs yet. So at this point, any speculation on its performance is completely baseless. Might as well just look at what's here now. Of course, once it does come out, prices for current cards will drop, regardless of 5870's performance.

Directx 12 comes with Windows 7, so that's 2010.

Then you have already answered yourself, i think... If your current card doesn't keep up on your res and desired detail settings, get another one, right?

I'd need to see some benchies of your card against a 4850/9800GTX+ and a 9800GX2 on your res to tell you "dude, get the 9800GX2 right now, you DO need that extra power".

I hope that explains my point a little better.

Well, all of my games sans crysis get 40fps+. Perhaps i should just hold off.

IDK.

The next PC games i'm going to buy are Left 4 Dead, and Fear 2. Should either of those kill my current rig?

The worst upgrade a person can get will always be a non-needed upgrade. Sounds clever, right? XD

That's my whole point here.

And, if i'm not mistaken, FEAR 2 will still use Q4's engine, so it should be close to Quake Wars, but a little more demanding.

Left for Dead is near CoD4 still.
