hey I'm new here....I tried searching for this, couldnt really find what I was looking for..wondering which setup would be better performing (gaming) in either a system with a :
-AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000 (3GHz)
OR
-Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Wolfdale (3GHz)
2 4850s are considerably faster than 2 8800GTs in most situations. Take a look at the Charts here, and on Guru 3d. As for the CPU the E8400 is definitely faster. If you have the money then go with the E8400 and 2 4850s with a P45 board. If you're on a small budget then it makes sense to consider an AMD system as well.

The E8400 and 4850's in crossfire would be a much more potent combination. The E8400 kills the 6000 clock for clock. The 4850 is quite a bit more powerful than the 8800GT. The 4850 also handles AA nicely.
Edit: another benefit of the crossfire setup is the ability to use an Intel chipset over the Nvidia one.

That matter in overclocking mostly, at stock, the difference is kinda null.
Anyway, a CF system with the Athlon64 would prolly still out perform an SLI system with the E8400.
Try to focus in getting the 4850's if you play around 1920x1200, cause there's where u'll get the most of your money invested.
A quad in this setup would be nice as well, as quads do work better for multi card/x2 setups
