I need some advice. I am re-building and want to use the Intel Q6600 in an Asus motherboard. I am on my 3d Asus MB and like them but I'm retired so I have a severe budget limit. I've chosen the 6600 because of the articles here listing it as the best in price/performance. My next step is the motherboard and memory.
I'm considering the Asus P5Q Pro.
I'm asking for any comments, tips, etc. on these selections OR any change I might make and stay in that price range.
I do very little gaming, most of my cpu time is spent in Adobe Photoshop CS4/Lightroom/Bridge and I'm using XP.
I have to stick to this price range so the rest of my $$$ can be spent on SATA devices since I'm still in the IDE world!
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

I also like Asus and I own a few of their motherboards, including a P5Q Deluxe. However, in that price range, the Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P is as good if not better: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128358&Tpk=ep45-ud3p

It has more features than the Asus P5Q Pro, a very good layout and I particularly like their eSata solution (not hot pluggable) that allows the connection of 2 SATA disks in the back (using the included adapter). Very useful to copy data, perform a quick test with a different OS, etc.

I don't know what your budget is but you may want to consider raid 5 using 4 250gb 32MB cache http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148309 this will give you about 750GB of redundant storage and use one more of the same type of drive for the OS only. I use this setup on my game machine along with a 1TB external backup drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148352 . For memory get 4GB of http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227364 along with Vista 64 bit.
