i am going to get a new 9800gtx but my current psu does not have enough available connectors
however i do have another 450 psu that came w/ my case
would hooking the graphics card up to a separate psu work/be safe to use as a short term solution until i get enough money to buy a good psu

Theres no substitute for a good power supply. Dont get an add on power box "juice box" as some are called. I tried that when I had a 650 watt psu and was trying to SLI two 8800GTX ANS3 cards and I used a 400 watt juice box and after booting up and running windows for 10 minutes I got a windows based message saying that my it was detected that my video cards were not getting enough power and they were automatically underclocked to keep them from getting damaged.

I called EVGA and they told me that doesnt work well and to go and get a good quality power supply. So I am recommending you do the same.

Newegg has good deals on quality corsair power supplies...
