I'm on the verge of making a new computer. I have almost every piece chosen, and my price range is $1000(with monitor)-1200(with monitor). The one piece of the puzzle missing is the CPU. The looming release of the Phenom II has made me think about waiting and buying everything after it comes out.
If i wasn't going to wait, i would get an E8500, and if i did wait i would get a X4 920(I would check the benchmarks on it to see if it really is a good CPU)
The computer will be for gaming, of the FPS variety, and of the Starcraft2/diablo 3 sort.
What's the verdict? E8500 or X4 920?
What can i expect to pay on a 4X 920 (the lowest of the deneb, in the AM2+ format)? that would help me determine much faster what I'm going to get.

True pricing is currently unknown. The few leaks that have gotten out (Australian price listings) suggest that the X4 940 will likely sell for slightly less than the i7 920, probably around $260-$275. I'd expect the X4 920 to be somewhere between there and the current price of the 9950, probably around $200-$225. I would say that it almost certainly will be more expensive than the E8500.
I won't tell you who's to get or which one to get, but I will tell you to get a quad core processor. More and more games are taking advantage of the extra cores. True, processor speed means a lot but up to only a certain degree. A year from now some people will wish they did vs a dual......... I have already and am in the process of swapping out my 6850.
Does anyone else find it amusing that Intel have the i7 920... and DAAMIT have x4 920? same numbers and a combination of a letter and number for the prefix?
