5000BE = Boot, Phenom = No Boot!

Hi.
I just moved my system from a Coolermaster WaveMaster to a Antec 900 case. In the process, I thought I would upgrade from my awesome (but aging) 5000 BE which I had running at 3.1GHz to a Phenom 9950BE. When I completed the move to the new case and installed the Phenom, the system wouldn't boot. All of the fans and lights would come on in the case. It seemed as the the system was hanging. The 4870's fan was running at full speed and one of my DVDRW drive's lights was flickering constantly. But nothing would show on the screen at all. So, I decided to reset the CMOS. After I reset the CMOS and boot, the 4870's fan was no longer running at full speed. But the light on the DVDRW was still flickering and nothing would show on the screen.

Next I thought I would but the 5000 back in. The system boot just fine with the 5000, so I switched back to the Phenom and, again, no luck.

What could be the problem? Could me power supply be to small? I know the Phenom requires more power to run, but I thought I would at least get it to boot before I would encounter problems. I wasn't expecting a no-boot!

This is the fourth system I have built, and the first time I have ran into problems during the first boot. Guess the luck couldn't last forever.

I know the mobo is compatible with the 9950, because AMD has my mobo listed on their site of compatible boards. I cfhecked before I ordered the Phenom.

Any help or tips would be appreciated. :wahoo:

SPECS:
Phenom 9950 BE (or 5000 BE)
ASUS M2N32-SLI Deluxe
Antec Neo HE500
Visiontek 4870 512MB DDR5
WD Velociraptor 300Gb
WD Caviar 500Gb

Any ideas?

Is your motherboard an AM2+ motherboard? Because Phenoms normally do not work on just AM2 boards.

Also some AM2+ motherboards are not designed to handle the 140Watt Phenoms.

Crap! I must have looked at it wrong! I could have swore in was on the list. Maybe I saw the M2N and thought it was the same. So, is there any way to switch motherboards without having to reinstall the OS?

Don't I feel like the Tom's Village Idiot.

Thanks.

So, do you think it would be possible to get a new AM2+ mobo with an Nvidia chipset and not have to re-install the OS? Or should I just go with a 790FX, re-install the OS, and hope to take advantage of the AMD Fusion? Your thoughts?

A friend of mine recommended putting the old chip back in and updating the BIOS. I hadn't thought of that. I will give that a try tonight. I got a new power supply too, just in case.

I was just going to suggest that (update the BIOS). Don't some boards need updates to run phenoms at all? Also, there are two versions of the 9950, a 125W and a 140W. If you bought one recently it should be a 125W.

I just received it yesterday. I ordered it new from new egg. I will try to determine which type it is.

Thanks!

Well, if you just received it yesterday I am pretty sure it is a 125W (the 140W has been deactivated for a while on Newegg I believe). Since your board (with the newest BIOS of course) supports the 9850, it seems possible it could support the 9950 125W. Worth a try, at any rate.

I was thinking the same thing. I did purchase a new 650w power supply today. I will hook it up tonight, too. Just in case that could be part of the problem. I doubt it is. I could understand if the 500w wasn't enough and caused crashes while I was gaming, but I doubt that it would result in no boot.

Also, on ASUS' website, I don't see much BIOS info related to specific processors. Think I could just update to the most recent and hope for the best?

Thanks!

Yep, it is the 9950 125W. Working so far. Let's see if it'll OC.
