Hey, thanks for taking the time to look at my thread. I am using an e-Machines T6528. The motherboard is a MS-7207G 100 (got that from Belarc Advisor). Currently I am using an AMD Athlon 64 3500+ (2.2 ghz single core, 2000 mhz system bus, 512 kb L2 cache) and it's just not cutting it. I upgraded to 3 gigs of RAM, a nice overclocked 8800 GTS (640 MB 320 bit edition) and my processor is severely holding back my gaming experience. I was wanting to upgrade to a http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6819103221 (AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+ (2.3 ghz dual core) and through looking in Wikipedia, I am guessing I have a socket 939, and in Wikipedia it says that an X2 will fit in a socket 939. I don't want to buy the processor and be dissappointed if it doesn't fit, so can someone confirm or invalidate this information?

sometimes u can upgrade it.. but the cpu u are looking at wont fit ur board if its a socket 939 that one is a AM2 so different pins if u do get one look for one in ebay.. better chance of getting a 939..

an am2 will not fit into a 939 socket. id suggest getting a new am2+ mobo and ddr2 ram while they're still cheap

the processor is an AM2 socket, so no it won't fit, sorry. you might find a 939 CPU on ebay, albeit quite overpriced.

I can see what you are saying. Does this mean the Wikipedia page is false? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Socket_939 It says AMD Athlon 64 X2 processors ranging from 3600+ to 4800+ will fit in the Socket 939. O_o

it's not false. it just means that AMD made a socket 939 version of those cpu models.

I would check for a Bios update before you do anything, but the guy that said get a new motherboard and CPU and perhaps memory is probably right. It would likely be about the same proice and turn out to be much faster

Not many faster cpu's are available for sale now that will work on that mb. I agree with black widow best to get a new Intel or AMD setup. You'll need a new cpu mb and ram. Probably in the neighborhood of $400 Intel and $300 for AMD, less depending on how you decide to go. Check your PSU to ensure that it will work with whichever platform you decide on.

Opteron X2 180 @ $190 and it's OEM with no fan include and only 30days warranty and about 99.9% of chance that this CPU won't work in your PC.
If you buy it from Ebay you never know what happened to the CPU before... and how long it'll last before dying out and with no warranty...

Better get a new CPU+MB+RAM. It might cost about the same as looking for a X2 939 model that'll fit your MB.

EDIT: oups forgot the link!
