Formating harddrive

i want to know advantages and dis advantagesof formating hard disk

its not like advantage & disadvantages in formatting a hdd.
if you want to install an OS either windows or linux then the operating system has to to installed on hdd with the format it knows & able to read, write operations,,
for windows its FAT & NTFS
in linux its ext2 & ext3
in mac its HFS
