I have a Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe mobo, AMD Athlon 64 3200+. It runs ok, but I'm just not happy with it anymore. The only game I play on it is FFXI online. It runs fine. I was interested in possibly getting a new cpu, dual core, or w/e I can get without doing a major upgrade. I was debating making a new PC but for me to be happy with it, I would end up spending close to a grand.

I wanted to go with:

Mobo:
EVGA 132-YW-E178-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 780i SLI FTW ATX Intel Motherboard

CPU:
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor Model BX80562Q6600 - Retail

RAM:
CORSAIR XMS2 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory

PSU:
OCZ GameXStream OCZ700GXSSLI 700W ATX12V SLI Certified CrossFire Ready Active PFC Power Supply

But after looking what I was gonna spend, I just realized maybe I can get by with just an upgrade to my CPU.

If anyone has a suggestion on a good/great CPU, that would work with my current mobo, I would appreciate it.

The last dual core 939 chip I saw was over at tigerdirect. It was about $180. You will see some improvement over the single core but performance isn't going to scream. Save your money and do an upgrade to core2 or wait and see what the phenom does.

My old machine is........ A8N32sli-del/4800/4gigocz....... plays everything but next to a dual core 6850 it's almost a dog so to speak.

is there anything compatible with a socket 939? other than a socket 939?

TigerDirect has the Opteron 180 for $190:

That's pretty much the best chip you can get for socket 939, and the only 939 dual-core that I've seen on sale for quite a while.

Keep in mind that $190 will get you a modern quad core. Check various forums online, you should be able to find a used dual core for around $100ish. Add in a new GPU, and for a little over $200 you could have a new dual core and a new 4830/9800GT. You probably have only 1GB of ram, so that will become a new problem.
