Okay, so I know that the i7 has a new technology QPI (quick path interconnect) but I am wondering how this relates to FSB.
"Performance numbers for QuickPath are reported to be 4.8 to 6.4 Gigatransfers per second (GT/s) per direction. Therefore the bandwidth amounts to 12.0 to 16.0 GB/s per direction, or 24.0 to 32.0 GB/s per link."
If you are buying an i7, which speed memory should you go with, like if FSB was 1333 then you would want compatible 1333MHz memory...What do you do for the 4.8 and 6.4 GT/s??
The memory controller is completely independent of the QPI. The CPU talks to the northbridge and the graphics and the hard drives and such through the QPI, and it has a completely separate, independent 3 channel memory controller. Therefore, the speeds of the memory and quickpath don't need to be linked in any way. Get the fastest memory that you can, though keep in mind that even just DDR3-1066 in tri channel mode will probably absolutely slaughter an old system running dual channel DDR3-1800+ through the FSB in memory bandwidth. Anything over 1600MHz is probably useless in an i7 right now, and even 1600 is pushing it a bit, just because the bandwidth isn't really needed.
