i use a 20" 1680x1050 res monitor. i want to be able to run MOST games at least at medium settings at this resolution with 60+ fps. all i'm gonna play are shooters and a little spore. so would an 8800gt do well with most games at medium+ settings at this res, or would i need a better card?
if i need a better card, is the performance difference between an 8800gt and a 9800gtx worth it? and is there a significant performance difference between the 9800gtx and the hd 4850?

You'll be able to play most games on medium settings at 1680x1050 with an 8800GT (9800GT) and get @60 fps. There's a small step between the performance of the 9800GT and the 9800GTX, small step to the 9800GTX+ and then a small step up to a HD4850. It's really a matter of budget, if you only spend $100-$110 then the 9800GT is a good choice, if you can spend $140-$150 then the HD4850 is a good choice.

With the 4850 presently around the $150 mark, I would consider it the front runner for best bang for your buck.

I agree except...the 9800GTX+ is faster than the HD4850.

The difference between 8800GT and 9800GT is 3 way SLI. If your not going to be running 3 cards in SLI. Go for the 8800GT. I'm running 2x8800GTs and i'm very impressed with the performance.
