I am about to order a new system and want to bounce it off you.
First and foremost I will be using the system as:
A. CAD machine
B. Light Gaming machine (I want to run modern FPS at full resi with good fps and be able to limp along for say 2-3 years on newer games)
C. Some 3D rendering (though i'll probably have a server doing this later on)
If I do some overclocking it will be pretty light and I doubt in the next 2 years i'll ever get another GPU.
So here we go:
Intel e8400
Crucial 4gb kit (2x2gb) DDR2 800 unbuff. (already purchased for 39.99)
Geforce 8800 gt
Gigabyte GA-EP35-DS3L (link http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 13128337R) PSU - V2 Viotek 600w
HeatSink - ZEROtherm FZ120 ZEN Aluminum & Copper
Case - YA 5x (here's the link as its not all that common http://3btech.net/blyadestgaca.html) Display - Samsung 206BW 20" (already purchased for 150 on craigslist)
4 case fans 3500 rpms
Black Internal Samsung SH-S203N SATA Lightscribe 20X
and for a hard drive...well i'm not exactly sure yet. I'm just going to hook up an old ide for the moment.
Any thoughts? I'd say of all the components i'm least confident with the motherboard. (especially as I haven't built a new machine since 2002)
Edit. I'm also thinking that maybe for a little more i might be better off with an 4850. This is all very hard since some of the brands I used before don't seem to have very many models in 2008. My old machine had an XP 1800+ on an Abit board supporting RAID crucial memory but Abit doesn't seem to be as big a player any longer. (Also i'm very hesitant to put alot of money down on the GPU. I remember when I spent nearly $500 on an ELSA Quadro 2 Pro and then found out with a few changes a Geforce 3 could be converted to one at half the price)

Also always gone for cheap power supplies which I regret and want to make a good choice this time.
I bought a Chiefmax 500w once and it died within about 3 years. Its replacement which was also 500w couldn't power everything. I think that the manufacturer or seller probably slapped a 500w label on a 400w unit. (Thats what I get for paying 20 bucks) I've even heard of chiefmax combusting.
