Mixing graphical ram quantities on a 4870..

Alrighty,

I already have a 4870 - 512mb.

If I were to get a 1gb version of the same card and put it into crossfire, how much ram could be utilized?

I have heard that only the ram on one card may be used. Would this mean that the system would use the 1gb, or the 512mb?

I think the textures will get shared.

[strike]so if say the game takes 200 mb of texture space then 1 card gets 100mb and the other will get the other 100mb. So if you have CF 4870 1gb version you technically have 2 gb because each card contains 1gb of storage.[/strike]

ops.. I wasn't reading carefully.. yes Dekasav is correct. Only 512 mb gets used because the 1 GB edition will limit itself to match the limiting card (the 512mb)

The cards will only use 512Mb of the RAM. Half of the new/second card's vRAM will go unutilized.

Unless you are going about 1900x1200 then more then 512 will seldom be utilised anyway
