my friend started his computer today to find there are lines going down the display on the post screen and windows only starts up in safe mode (still with lines). I tested my monitor on his computer and got given the same result.
Specs:
e6600
ASUS P5N-E SLI
4GB ram
ASUS EXTREME N8800GTS/HTDP/320M
COOLERMASTER EXTREME POWER PLUS V2.3 460w
I'm thinking the gfx card is to blame but I would like to get your opinions before i potentially make him buy something he doesn't need.
If you suggest some hardware needs replacing please make recommendations on what to replace it with. This is a gaming machine that plays a wide range of games. The budget allows anything within reason price/performance wise.

Id reseat the gfx card. Id clean out the case, make sure theres no dust bunnies, and while I had the gfx card out, clean it out as well. Get a can of compressed air and blow thru the card. Look to see if the fins on the heat sink are plogged etc. Id also check my DX by going into run>dxdiag and run a test to see if everythings running ok. Id check the temps as well using nv monitor or some 3rd party SW. Try these things first

ok I swapped the gfx cards between our two rigs and the problems stopped for him and started for me so its defiantly a gfx card problem. I took the plastic cover off and blew out the dust with my mouth because we don't have compressed air but that didn't help. I didn't check temps because i didn't feel like downloading and installing an app to check it. Also i would assume when you first turn the computer on the card would only just be above room temperature by the time it reaches the POST screen.
Here are some screen shots of what it looks like...
oops excuse the bad cropping on this pic ^^
The warranty on the card has expired so I was thinking a 4850 would be a good replacement.

Itd be an ecellent replacement, and youll see at least a 30% performance increase, and be able to use AA like you never have before. Its the card then, tho it could still be a heat issue. Most likely bad ram tho, but who knows for sure without further attempts. Id get a 3rd party sw for checking temps, its always better safe than sorry, and will help you protect your investment down the road

That is so weird cos my 8800GTS 320MB card died today too. Exact same problem. Before it started I had just installed Portal Prelude. Then when I started it up the screen gfx went haywire - same for othe games. So I removed the card cleaned it out and put it back in. Now the Post screen has lines down it and XP starts in low-res. Device Manager tells me that it couldn't start the card because it has a problem (+ yellow triangle icon). One thing I did do before all this was run GPU-Z. I hope that didn't glitch the firmware in the card. Anyway I'm going to try another NVidia card in it to check the PC before I buy a new card proper.
hah interesting coincidence. I've checked the temps with speed fan which listed several temps as temp1, 2, 3, etc. all of the temperatures were below 50 except core 1 and 2.
ty for input. A radeon 4850 is on its way.
