Which Card to get ?????

The 4870 X2 is about $100 more than the Geforce 9800 GX2.

Decisions! Decisions!!

Also would 2GB of Video RAM be OVERKILL?

If so then lets compare

Geforce 9800GX2 -OR- 4870 X2 1GB 512-bit ( 1 GB version )????

These two are almost same price.

Keep in mind this is for gaming.

Thnx.

i would go with the 4870x2 its much faster + new tech. =]
there is no current 1gig model yet 2gig maybe is overkill now but new games will benefit it also depends what resolution your playing at.

4870X2. Or, if you can spend an extra hundred, get 2 of the lower clocked GTX 280s and SLI the fools. It will be better than 1 4870X2.

Or, if you're crazy like me, get 3 OC gtx 280s.

I've seen numerous benchmarks that show the HD 4870X2 beating GTX 280's in SLI. And 2 GTX 280's.... think about the environment, man!

2 GTX 280's is only marginally better than 1 4870x2, and in some cases, the x2 actually beats the SLI setup. If you're crazy, get a pair of 4870x2's.

However, to answer the OP's actual question, the 4870x2 is the way to go. I don't think there are 1GB versions yet though - only the 2GB.

2 GB is just split in half for each PCB so you only have 1 gig of memory.

Don't forget that you can get 2 9800 GX2s for the price of 1 4870 X2.

But since your starting from scratch I'd go with the 4870 X2. I mean theres no point going to old tech if your going aim for top of the line.

Oh yeah and the 4870 X2 is about 30% on average better than the 280 GTX, so don't listen to ppl that say marinally, its only in some cases where it matches the 280 GTX SLI. Most of the time it lags behind, but the whole point is that you save like 300$ going with 1 4870 X2 and to be able to sometimes match or even comes close to 2 280 GTXs is insane for 560$:)
