I have the same problem, it started yesterday when I ran 3dmark06. My card have had some other problems after I overclocked it.
So I overclocked it to 820/1050. I ran 3dmark06 and then Atitool said error in first test and it returned my card to previous clocks. But after that my FPS in games have been lower than ever. First time when I "installed" this new graphic card (Palit 4870 1gb Sonic Dual Edition) FarCry2 worked perfectly Ultra High and 8xaa (or what it was), but now it lags when I have only Ultra High and no AA. :F
So someone have any tips to tell what to do?
Intel E8400 3.7Ghz
Abit IP35 Pro
4Gb DDR2 (2x 800mhz)
Palit 4870 1gb Sonic Dual Edition
Western Digital 500Gb

YEESS!! It works now, I removed all old drivers what I downloaded from Ati's website and all programs for Ati Radeon. Then I went to Palit's websites and downloaded new drivers. And now everything works perfectly. So if you have Palit's 4870 then you have to download drivers from Palit's websites.
Tip for everyone:
Palit have much more graphic cards, not just only 4870 so if you have Palit's card you should try to download drivers from
