Alright, I came up with this build and if you have any advice please give it.

Q6600
4 gigs ocz reaper memory
hd4870
150 gig raptor
antec 300

I don't know which motherboard to use. I want a p45 motherboard (or p35 if the pci-e 1.1 doesn't bottleneck the card) that can be used to overclock the q6600, preferably to 3.6 ghz. I would also like some input on the best cpu coolers for the money to be had.

Thanks!

I wouldn't get a Raptor - overpriced for the performance. If you really want something fast, you could set up a RAID 0 array. (the 640 gb hard drives are only 2 platters and are a great deal)

Xigmatek makes a great CPU cooler. Check out:

That ought to help on the cooler.

A p45 board is great if you don't want to get another 4870 in the future for crossfire.

Good choices. Have fun.

There is a separate section for these questions ;)

Why would you prefer a P35 board? Are you trying to save money? If so the first thing you should change is the Raptor.

You should not choose P35 over P45, especially if you want to overclock. Any P45 is good at overclocking, but the more you spend the more overclocking features you will get.

A good board for OC at a good price is the ASUS P5Q -E.

The best cooler is the Xigmatek S-1283. It comes in second for cooling on the frostytech list, and a separate bracket can be purchased that goes with it, so that you can bolt it down and not mess with annoying push-pins.

i was just wondering but is the tuniq tower still up there in the hsf rankings?

as for motherboard, the ds3r has firewire the ds3l does not, i have the p35-ds3r and it OCs quite well

Look at the pictures. Compare the cooling and the number of cans around the CPU socket.

You'll get more voltage options and more stability out of the -E, I'm fairly confident in saying. The Gigabyte you linked is very comparable to the P5Q Pro however.

I think the lower end P45s struggle with Quad OCs. Not that they can't do them, but they can't do them as well.

The P5Q -E is the least expensive board that I know of, that gets into the features of the more expensive boards. MSI likely has something, but I don't quite trust them as much as ASUS or Gigabyte.
