Ordering my computer today and need help building it. It is going to be used for internet browsing, some photoshop, and basic general usage. it is going to have an INTEL i7 quad core 2.66GHz processor. i want it to be fast and able to multi task. my options are as follows

500gb sata 7200rpm seagate barracuda 7200.12 for $59
or
150gb sata 10000rpm WD VelociRaptor for $189

Which one is better. Which one is faster? Is there a noticeable difference? I have an 80gb external for storage and back-up, so storage amount isn't that big of a deal. What do you think?

I would get two of the 500Gb Seagates. They are single platter designs and are pretty fast and the price is right.

It depends on what you mean by "better" and "faster".

The 7200rpm drives are obviously better in cost/byte terms.

For transfer rates, the two are probably similar.

For access times, the 10000rpm drives will be faster.

In general, most people asking about performance are looking for faster boot and application load times. For that kind of performance, the 10000rpm drives would be best.
