I want to be able to cap HDTV television shows (like the torrent files you find on various torrent sites). But I have no idea where to even start. Can someone help me figure out what I need to buy in order to do this?

My service provider is DirectTv. I have a HDTV subscription and have a DVR.

Do I need some kind of tuner card in order to do this? Is it really complicated? I'm kind of clueless so if anyone could help me in picking something out, that would be great.

EDIT: Would something like this work? http://www.pinnaclesys.com/PublicSite/us/Products/Consu... Does it record in HDTV? I Want something easy and this looks like something I wouldn't need to install or anything. But I'm not sure if it does what I need it to do?

i've been researching on this for quite a while and it seems the best way to do it is to get a HD tv tuner card and plug the component cables from your receiver to your tv tuner card/ graphics card.

Thanks. I was hoping I wouldn't have to go that route because I literally have no idea how to install one of those. Don't you have to like open up your computer and install the card? I've never done anything like that. It looks so complicated, I'd probably break something.

Do you have anymore info/help about installing something like this?

EDIT: I am getting a custom made computer from here. http://www.avadirect.com/product_details_configurator.a... This probably sounds stupid but is there anyway I can have them install it for me? I mean is a regular graphics card different from this? Or can you get a graphics card that already includes a tv tuner? Sorry, I know nothing about this stuff lol.

the ati cards come with not a tv tuner but it can take in an external video source and play it on your computer. the only downside is that it can't record TV it just decodes it. but thats why you got the DVR right?

as far as installing the card itslef its like installing a nintendo cartridge, all you do is figure out which slot it goes in and insert and than screw it down.

So what kind would you recommend? I just need to make sure it captures in HD. I've heard Hauppauge is a good brand. What specific model do you recommend? I can spend up to $200. And it has to be compatible with Vista Ultimate 64-bit.

most people have told me to go hauppauge or pinnacle. or one of the ati all-in-wonder cards (which is guaranteed vista 64 bit compatibility.)
