im a bit confused. i hope you'll set me straight. when determing memory as in pc 5400 pc6400 etc.. do you go by what your motherbord can support on the fsb. as example ive been looking and my motherboard has a max fsb of 1066mhz. ( it is an older ecs nforce 570 slit a board) but i believe im only running pc 5400 (667mhz) memory. the cpu is an pentium d 830 3ghz which is running a fsb of 800mhz. i guess i was wondering if i bump up the cpu to a core 2 duo at 1066mhz (which the board will take) should i or do i have to change out my memory? if so how do i determine what it will take?
thanks for the replies

when you look at your mb specs it will say what type of ram it will take. before you buy a new cpu just make sure your mb supports it. simply because you board has a max of fbs1066 doens not always mean every 1066 cpu will work.

you can use cpu-z to give you more info on your current systems specs.

i understand the cpu part and the mb does accept that. core 2 duo/ pent d/p4/ and celeron d. it was the memory i was wondering on. but i find on ecs web that they still have the spec on this mb and i guess it only takes ddr2 667/533 ddr2 sdram with dual channel ddr2 architecture. so i guess i answered my own stupid question. it does matter if i upgrade cpu or not i still wont have to mess with the memory.
thanks for the replies.

i ran cpu-z and did notice that my dram freq is at 337.5mhz
fsb:dram is at 4:6
cas lat. 5 clocks
trcd is at 6
trp 6
tras 16
and bank is 21
is that ok or is that off a bit?
i dont understand how a rated stick of 667mhz is running at 333mhz.

333 x DOUBLE data rate [ ddr ] = 667MHz

Your mb will detect the speed at which your memory runs and will automatically adjust the ratiao between fsb and memory frequency .

No need to change memory if you change cpu , but you might get a small improvement by using 800Mhz Memory , or even by trying to overclock the memory you have
