Go for 1 HD 4870X2:
1_It performs like 2xHD 4870 and in some cases better than it.
2_It doesnt need a CrossFire ready motherboard and needs 1 PCI-E 16x slot.

on benchmarks x2 does scale better than dual cards and you will save some space
Save some space? Yes and No. You may only have one card with the X2 but that one card is much longer then the 4870 so you need to take case depth into concideration.
And 4870 CF will has some situations. because some games will not be optimize for cross fire
Not quite sure what you mean, but games not optimized for CF will NOT gain much from a 4870x2. The 4870x2 is basically "Crossfire on a card", so there is no magical gain when CF is not supported.
However, I do agree with most when they say the 4870x2 is better than 2 4870 in CF. As it was mentioned, you save space, but mostly you save on the MB price (250$+ for an X48 vs 100$+ for a P45 ...). Moreover, the 4870x2 has an additional "bus" that allows the 2 GPU to communicate with each other, which is why it generally beats the 4870 in CF.

The X2 card may not need a Crossfire supported board but the card itself is running in Crossfire so games not being optimized for Crossfire is still got to be a hit on the card.
The chip that allows the cards to work in Crossfire is now right on the card between the GPU's and thats why you don't need a motherboard with Crossfire support.
One thing you need to remember about Crossfire is that even if you use two 4870's with 1Gb of memory your total graphics memory will still only be 1Gb, Crossfire uses two GPU's not both cards memory.

I think the OP understood that; since the 4870x2 has 2GB (1GB per GPU) and the mainstream 4870 has 512MB, he felt he needed to be specific to compare things as similar as possible.

And as I said when operating in Crossfire it does not use both GPU's memory, the 4870X2 with 2Gb of memory (1Gb per GPU) is only using a total of 1Gb of memory. I do agree with you because it would be a cheaper setup with two mainstream 4870's then it would with the 4870X2 but more costly with two 4870's with 1Gb of memory each. But I use two 4870's with 512mb and the only game I play that can't be maxed out on settings is Crysis on a 24" monitor playing at 1920X1200 but it sure still looks great and plays smooth.
