If one were to select a digital TV set, what would be the minimum video
connection (component? S-video? what other?) that a bare-bones scaler would
provide?

Best Video....... HDMI or DVI (digital stream), note HDMI only
Does
Dolby Digital 2.0 audio, not 5.1 DD
Component (Analog)
S-Video
Composite
Lesser Video RF Analog
