I have a SATA harddrive that won't boot windows XP. The XP splash screen logo is displayed for a few seconds, then it constantly reboots. If I choose the "disable automatic restart on system failure" bootup option, I get an UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME error on a BSOD.

So I decided to simply rescue the data, and I connected it to a SATA/USB interface, which has an LED labeled "SATA" that lights up when the harddrive is recognized & connected. I verified that by connecting a known good SATA drive myself.

But with this particular harddrive, the SATA LED does not light up and I don't see a removable device in my windows explorer. Apparently the SATA drive isn't recognized, although it WAS recognized enough to attempt to start windows when connected to the motherboard.

What next step can I take to get the data off the drive?
