Fluctuating / incosistent ping / ms

Hi, i'm on an ethernet connected to router and for the past couple of days, my ping has been driving me nuts!
My download speed and upload speed are top notch but when I get in games, my performance suffers and I KNOW my computer's specs handle the game (counter-strike)

I did ping test and got these results:

look how much the ping varies... just like in game.. one second I'd be doing fine at 20 ping, the next I'm up at the 80s.. please help!

Remove the router from you network and try the ping again connected directly to the modem. If the pings don't change then the problem is either with the modem or outside your network which means you sol.
Try numerous sites as the ping time can also be affected by their end and not just yours.
If the pings go down with the router configured you might check the router config and see if there is anything you can set as far as port forwarding.
If you have a friend with a router you can see if you can borrow theirs for a test.

Thank you for the reply. I tried removing the router like you said and the pings DO change, they go up about 80 ms. I tested yahoo.com this time.

I don't really understand what you mean by "you might check the router config and see if there is anything you can set as far as port forwarding." I know what port forwarding is and how to do it but I don't know what you're implying I should do. I've looked there before when I didn't have any ping issues and it had nothing forwarded.

try several different sites and see how they compare.
Following is a tracert to the same address as you. As you can see while I am still on my 40MB line the pings are great. Once I get 2 hops past chicago the pings go way up.

As for the port forwarding part don't worry about it as that is not the problem.
Spend some time and tracert alot of places. Call some close friends and tracert their external IPs and see what you get. I'll bet you it's on the ISPs side and not yours.

Ok i will do that,

but see how ur tracert is so consistent? it is almost exactly the same or 1 ms off each try

i dont care about high ping, i just want some consistency, and also, yesterday late at night, i was playing counter strike and i had perfect ping (avg 20 ms in the server) and there were no instances of sudden high ping(usually it goes 80 ms then back down for a second).

High usage on the server can cause high pings or even high usage on the main pipe to that server. There are so many things that can cause high pings. Pretty much if your network is low then the problem is outside your home and there is nothing you can do about it. Try a different server location, IE east coast instead of westcoast.

im on router/modem, not on wireless, and yea lately it really seems like its the ISP cuz sometimes its regular ping (usually mostly late at night)

still havent solved this problem =/

Hi have the EXACT problem as the person who made this thread, download and upload speeds are great, but when it comes to online gaming it's up and down. Now my modem and wireless router are one, so i cant remove the router. Ive tried resetting it (off-on) it goes good for 5mins then back to crap ping.
Im not a network techie so i have NO idea what else you were talking about, or recommended doing, if you could break it down for me, because im about to explode.
