some news on nvidia's new cards
http://www.fudzilla.com/index.php? [...] 9&Itemid=1
"Back in the summer time we’ve reported that Nvidia has plans for 55nm based version of GT200 chip. We’ve learned that such a chip should have support for GDDR5 and naturally be able to run at least a bit faster.
According to some projections, AMD hopes that even a revamped GT200 with higher clock won’t be able to beat their top Radeon HD 4870 X2 offering. For Nvidia and its partners there is a hope that the performance crown can and should be back.
We also heard some rumours of dual chip Nvidia based card coming by the end of the year but this is something that we cannot confirm. If Nvidia makes such a product it will definitely set some records in heath and power dissipation.
Graphic market is awfully quiet especially on Nvidia side as the company simply doesn’t have a winning strategy against ATI, at least no until November. The new chips, if they come should come by late November. "
i expected it anyways. not huge news.
nvidia would have been dumb if they didnt use gddr5
really sweet stuff thanks
GGDR5 on a 512 bit bus
Even with the increased clocks this seems like overkill for GT200(b?). Note this is pure speculation; I haven't seen any conclusive tests showing that the GTX280 is not memory bandwidth limited. On second thought G92 was shown to be memory bandwidth limited in many cases and GT200 hasn't changed the compute power to memory bandwidth ratio all that much...
The bigger question for me is WTF are GT206 and GT212??
i think they will move to a 256 bit bus
Or they may use a 384 bit bus just so they can have some insane bandwidth. Then again if they make a dual card solution out of it then it would be much more of a pain to have two chips with a 384 bit bus than a 256 bit bus. I guess we'll just wait and see. Either way nVidia will need a dual chip GPU to beat the 4870X2.
+1 for 256 bit bus
It seems like there will be enough bandwidht with 256 bit bus especially when GDDR5 itself is getting faster and faster. And it'll save some more money.
i cant wait till ddr5 comes to the desktop
might do well as long as they are not ridiculously overpriced like $650 a pop.

Becuase DDR3 is so much faster than DDR2...
A die shrink and DDR5 without other improvements may allow GTX 280 to beat the 4870 in all benchies that's about it. The 4870x2 has nothing to fear at this point. The bigger deal is that they should be able to bring the price down.
lets just wait and see price drops
well i ha ati 4850 so I'm set for this generation....
It better have GDDR5!
I dont understand why nVidia went for GDDR3 in the first place.
Now they have to do it the hard way via a chip refresh...
As for the interface, Id say a 320-bit interface is totally sufficient to feed the chip OR a 256-bit one with some more aggressive clock speeds than in the 4870.
GDDR5 on a 512bit bus is going to be very interesting to see, though if it does happen it's going to be very expensive and probablly exclusive to Nvidia's top card. Heck imagine what a GTX260 could do with half the memory bus and GDDR5! Who knows what ATi has up it's sleeve too?
I need a card to replace my HD4850 for far cry 2. I don't think it can handle it @ 1680x1050 on max. I hope this is my awnser. To say the least, This generation is rather pathetic.
4850 can mostly handle crysis max at 1680 by 1050...
and far cry 2 doesn't look better than crysis in my opinion... explosions/particles... definitely not... foliage definitely not... buildings maybe...
Unless its ANOTHER poorly coded game (as thats unlikely...) then it should run fine

Agreed. Everything I've seen from FC2 looks good, but not Crysis good. And of course Crysis is not poorly coded
.
Back on topic, I think I'll call BS on Fudzilla for now. 55nm GT200 (GT200b?) is supposedly nothing more than a simple die shrink, and GT200 does not support GDDR5. I expect a 55nm GT200 card with GDDR3, and then later a 55 or 40nm card (GT212?) with a smaller memory bus and GDDR5.
I was mainly referring to Stalker Clear sky... *Glares long and hard at it*
as its poorly programmed and doesn't look good
Ahh, well I haven't picked it up yet but if it's anything like SoC then I know exactly what you're talking about.

lol. SoC was a slideshow on my 8800GTS320.....
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. likes its VRAM.

You've gotta be kidding me... you're going to upgrade your card that you bought less then 4 months ago... when it was one of the best budget cards ever?
Man, I'm keepin my HD4870 for at least a year and a half. I be waiting for the HD7870 with 1.5GB of GDDR7
.
^Yeah, he needs to replace his 4850 'cause he doesn't -think- it will run FarCry 2
I have money to burn and a pocket to let it fall out of. I was thinking the same about Far Cry 2. We'll just have to see how it works. I'm sure it can't be more demanding than Crysis. I don't think I'll worry too much.
If he upgrades, it should be from 2GB to 4GB ram. It wouldn't hurt to get an e8400 OCed to 4GHz if his mobo can support that. If he insists on a video card upgrade, I guess he could grab another hd4850 for xfire.

Really? 4GHz?
50% chance youll hit 4GHz at or below 1.4v on an e8400, ive read a database of such OCs
