can't hotsync

My Palm m515 suddenly won't hotsync. I get this error:

The connection between your handheld computer and
the desktop could not be established. Please check your setup and try
again.

It is not a cradle problem. Both the office and home connections are
giving me this error. Before this occurred, however, I accidentaly
left my Palm on until the battery almost depleted. I'm sure it has
something to do with this.

I tried a soft reset, nothing. I'm afraid to try a hard reset if I'm
not sure I can restore my data. Any ideas?
