Hardware id missing

When I try to use my external Western Digital 350 combo drive, I get a "hardware I.D. missing" message. Tried on both an XP and a Vista computer. Also, tried both the usb and firewire connection. Also tried a different Power Supply.

Remove the drive from the enclosure and hook it up directly to a computer.
The enclosure may be bad.
