Printing problem with Lexmark printer/Dell computer

Hello,
I am an elderly lady trying to solve printing problems with lexmark. I have uninstalled and reinstalled according to Lexmark instructions. Have tried 5 times but still no luck. Printer icon says it is offline ? can anyone help ?

Turn off your anti virus, or security programs before installing the printer software (your printer may not install correctly if the security is turned on)
after the printer is successfully installed, restart the computer and turn the security back on.

click start, control panel, printers and faxes, is your printer shown on the list? Does your printer (icon) have a green check mark next to the icon?
You will also notice that deleting older, unused printers from this list will check mark your recently installed printer automatically. The green check-mark must appear on your intended printer icon.
Then re-start the computer, restart the printer, printer should be recognized.
